Alumni Journal

Habitat for Humanity is an organization that gave us the unique opportunity to change lives in the San Diego community. Our group volunteered for two days and the Habitat sites were so happy with how much we accomplished. We were all determined to do as much as we could within those two days and help as many families as possible. Members of our group were able to meet and work with some of families that were going to be living in these future homes, and it was just a great feeling to know that we were helping these people and making their future lives that much easier. To see how grateful and happy these families were to have us there helping, really made us all feel great and appreciate how lucky we are. I think that at the end of the two days we all had great memories to take with us and left with a new appreciation of our own homes.

The Boys and Girls Club was a very fun and memorable experience for us all. On our first day we arrived at 8 am not sure what to expect, but by noon, we began to form friendships that could not be torn apart. The Boys and Girls Club was a very special moment in our trip, not only because of the fun we had doing the actual service, but making connections and learning how similar we really were to the kids at the club. When we left after our 4 days there, it was very hard because of the strong relationships that we formed with the children.

Family is the people who love you most, who would do anything to make you smile when you’re sad, and they are the people who will always forgive you. But who said family had to be related to you? After a month of getting to know one another you realize family can come in all different shapes, sizes, and personalities. These people aren’t just friends they are my family. These people became lifelong friends without even knowing it. These are the people who hold your hand when you feel lost, but mostly, these are the people who do not judge you, and take you the way you are.

- Kelsey, Community Service California, 2009
